Apple wants Samsung to pay $15.7 million, or roughly one-fourth of its payments to Morrison Foerster LLP, which represented Apple in the suit, and the recent retrial of damages. Apple said that amount includes only fees for lawyers who billed more than $100,000 in the case, and reflected reductions it made "to be conservative."

Apple filed the documents in U.S. District Court in San Jose, Calif., on Thursday.

Last month, a federal jury ordered Samsung to pay Apple $290 million in damages for infringing on five Apple patents with 13 Samsung devices, bringing the total damages owed to Apple from Samsung to $930 million. The case was a retrial of a portion of the $1.05 billion in damages awarded in the original case in 2012.

In the new documents, Morrison Foerster partner Rachel Krevans said Apple paid the firm $56.5 million for work in the case between April 2011 and August 2013. Including work the firm has done since August, the bills will total about $60 million, Ms. Krevans said in a declaration.

Apple said it expects to pay an additional $2 million in legal fees to another firm, Wilmer Culter Pickering Hale and Dorr LLP.

In its filing, Apple said the billing rates that the company paid its lawyers were "reasonable, and reflect substantial discounts."

The fees only pertain to Apple's infringement suit against Samsung. There is a separate suit being brought by Samsung against Apple for patent infringement, which is expected to start next year.

An Apple spokeswoman and a Samsung spokesman declined to comment. Morrison Foerster had no immediate comment.
