Apple holiday commercial subject of ridicule - Investor's Business Daily

Apple's (AAPL) holiday commercial "Misunderstood" has rekindled debate over the impact of personal technology such as smartphones on society.

The much-talked-about Apple TV commercial shows a sullen, disconnected teen fixated on his iPhone while his family celebrates the joys of Christmas. But, surprise, it turns out he was making a video of his family the whole time. Some thought the tear-jerker ad was wonderful, while others found it sad. Check out the debate at Forbes and Gizmodo.

Comedians have long addressed through humor the impact of technology on our personal relationships and culture.

Satire website the Onion had perhaps the best response to the Apple commercial with its article, "Relatives Gather From Across The Country To Stare Into Screens Together."

Online comic the Joy of Tech illustrated outtakes from the Apple commercial. They included Grandpa yelling: "You mopey little brat! Stop playing with your stupid phone and join the rest of this happy family!"

Someecards posted a topical e-card stating, "Here's hoping the iPhone 5S totally revolutionizes the way I ignore human beings."

On Christmas, handset maker Nokia (NOK) tweeted a comic depicting beach vacations before and after smartphones. The comic is reminiscent of the Tumblr blog Hot-Dog Legs, which ridicules one common type of Instagram photo.

Earlier this month, comedy duo Rhett McLaughlin and Link Neal of Rhett & Link posted a music video called "Get Off The Phone," a song about people missing life because they're on their phones.

In October, talk-show host Jimmy Kimmel suggested a cure for iPhone addiction called "Stop Looking at Your F***ing Phone Every 5 Seconds ."

Some people are so hooked at looking at their smartphones that they're getting into accidents while walking. One woman walked off a pier recently in Melbourne, Australia, while checking Facebook (FB) on her phone. Then there's the woman who fell into a fountain while texting at a shopping mall in Pennsylvania.

Filmmaker Jesse Rosten did a funny "Smartphone PSA" video earlier this year about the hazards of using smartphones while walking.

Mobile chipmaker Qualcomm (QCOM) provided another side of the story by making a funny video titled "The World Without Mobile." It depicts what life would be like without mobile email, music, video, Twitter (TWTR), Facebook and Angry Birds.
