Apple awarded $930M, but denied sales ban, in Samsung patent battle - GigaOM

Apple was just awarded nearly one billion dollars, but ultimately lost its latest round in an ongoing patent dispute with rival smartphone maker Samsung. Judge Lucy Koh on Thursday denied Apple’s request for a permanent ban on a number of Samsung devices found to infringe on Apple’s patents.

This was Koh’s final judgment on the damages awarded to Apple in its case last year, which initially pit the figure at $1.05 billion. The final total is $929.8 million, which is pretty close to the original figure, but Apple was hoping for more than just money. The company was seeking a permanent sales ban on 23 Samsung devices.

Judge Koh, however, ruled that Apple “has not established that it is entitled to the permanent injunction it seeks.”

Apple and Samsung can both appeal the decision. There’s not much time to think about it, however, as the companies are scheduled to return to the courtroom later this month to argue over another set of patents that Samsung has been accused of infringing.
