Apple showed off revamped versions of its iLife and iWork apps Tuesday at its event in San Francisco. iPhoto, iMovie and GarageBand are all getting new looks.
Apple is calling this the biggest update to iWork ever. Pages, Numbers and Keynote were reworked for iOS 7, and completely rewritten for the Mac. Apple App Store chief Eddy Cue says iWork now has "full file compatibility."
Keynote, Apple's answer to Microsoft Office PowerPoint, gets new transitions with more realistic physics-based movements. Numbers gets an object-based design and interactive charts. All three apps have new layouts that work well on both the desktop and on iOS.

iWork as a whole gets a sharing feature, which lets you collaborate with others on the same document and edit it in real time through iCloud. iWork for iCloud is still in beta, and it will compete against Google's completely cloud-based Google Drive services, which offers word processing, spreadsheets, and presentation services.
On to iLife, iPhoto for iOS gets a new look that's black and gray instead of silver. Also new is book making for iPhoto on iOS. It's a feature that lets you design books on your phone or tablet, then pay Apple to print it and send it to you.
iMovie also gets a new design, and revamped editing features. You can now use the app to share videos directly to social-networking services. On iOS, there's a picture-in-picture feature; on the Mac, there are special slow-mo controls for 120fps video captured on the iPhone 5S. Lastly, there's iMovie Theater, which takes clips you've made and syncs them up on iOS and on Apple TV via iCloud.
Lastly, GarageBand too gets a new look and goes from support for 8 tracks to 16. You can now add backup drummers and purchase additional instruments in the app.
Both iLife and iWork will be free with the new purchase of a Mac or iOS device.

The news follows Apple's announcement during its iPhone event in September, where the company said that it is giving away iWork, its suite of mobile productivity apps, for free on all new iPhones, iPads, and iPod Touches.
