Some free advice for Apple: Quit making those videos where chief designer Jony Ive gives his deep thoughts on the look and feel of new products. They're pretentious and have become a parody of themselves.
Ive needs to come speak at Apple (AAPL) product launch events in person. His talking-head promotional videos have spawned scores of parodies by late-night comedians and YouTube comics. Last month's iPhone 5C and 5S launch sparked a flurry of such parody videos, as documented by IBD's Friday Funnies.
This week, Funny or Die went meta and made a video about how to make Apple parody videos. All you need is a camera, white background and some inspiring music. Then to make it go viral, you need to get it picked up by the Huffington Post, which this video was. Funny or Die posted its video on Tuesday, the day Apple held its media event to announce its new tablets: the iPad Air and iPad Mini with Retina display.
CollegeHumor posted a video featuring an off-camera "Jonny Five" accidentally airing his true feelings about the iPad Air. The video by JLE Productions portrays Ive as being sick of making such promotional videos.
Satirical news service the Onion hammered Apple with its article "Apple's Plans To Revive Its Innovative Image." Among the plans: CEO Tim Cook will adopt the more youthful name A.J. Cook.
The funniest Apple-themed video lately is "Obama Takes His Shutdown Government to the Apple Store" by CollegeHumor. It portrays the president trying to fix his broken "government" by taking it to the Apple Genius Bar. It's a classic and worth checking out.
Late-night comedians also picked on Apple. Their other targets included Amazon (AMZN), Barnes & Noble (BKS), Facebook (FB), Microsoft (MSFT) and RadioShack (RSH). What follows are jokes from Jimmy Fallon, Jimmy Kimmel, Conan O'Brien and Jay Leno.
Kimmel: In San Francisco, Apple unveiled its new products. Apple said, "This iPad is the fastest and most vivid way to not be able to log on to the ObamaCare website."
Kimmel: The new iPad will be available on Nov. 1. And it is important that you get it right away. Otherwise you could be mistaken for a homeless person, and restaurants will refuse to seat you.
Fallon: This kinda made me sad a little bit. There's talk that Apple is getting ready to stop making the iPod, now that users can listen to music on their phones. Yeah, they say the product is quickly becoming dated and obsolete — then RadioShack said, "We'll take a billion of 'em!"
