The company also said it would add a rear-facing, five megapixel camera to its entry-level 16 gigabyte iPod Touch, which will also be available in more colors—pink, yellow, blue, silver and space gray. The additions to that model are already available on the higher-capacity 32GB and 64GB models.
Starting Thursday, the 16GB model is available for $199; it previously sold for $229. The 32GB iPod Touch, which previously sold for $299, is available for $249. The 64GB model will sell for $299, a $100 price cut from its previous selling price of $399.
The move comes as the tech titan recently reported that its revenue from iPod slid to $461 million from $962 million in the March quarter from a year earlier.
The iPod, which Apple launched in 2001 to much fanfare, is now one of the lowest contributors to the company's top line as many customers use iPads and iPhones to host their music libraries.
Apple's revenue from iPods, which come in other models such as iPod shuffle and iPod classic, accounted for about 1% of its total $45.65 billion revenue during that period. It sold 2.76 million iPod units, down from 5.63 million a year earlier.
