Apple denies helping NSA hack iPhone customers' information - New York Daily News

We’re not narcs, Apple says.

The technology giant insists it never worked with the National Security Agency to hack into iPhone users’ personal information.

“Apple has never worked with the NSA to create a backdoor in any of our products, including iPhone,” Apple said in a statement released to numerous media outlets. “Additionally, we have been unaware of this alleged NSA program targeting our products. We care deeply about our customers’ privacy and security.”

Apple went on the defensive following a report by Der Spiegel that detailed a spying program called DROPOUTJEEP described in documents leaked by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden.

The secret program reportedly allows the government near total access to hacked iPhones: text messages, voicemails, contacts and more.

NSA hackers could even turn on a phone’s microphone and camera without the owner’s knowledge, according to the report.

Spies needed physical access to phone in order to install clandestine software, but the leaked slide notes “a remote installation capability will be pursued in the future.”

Tech security expert Jonathan Applebaum, who worked with Der Spiegel on the report, accused Apple of cooperating with the NSA.

“I don’t really believe that Apple didn’t help them,” Applebaum said during a presentation in Germany that coincided with Der Spiegel report. “I can’t really prove it, but they literally claim that anytime they target an iOS device, that it will succeed for implementation.”

Apple says it didn’t know about the program and would hav never collaborated on it.

“Whenever we hear about attempts to undermine Apple’s industry-leading security, we thoroughly investigate and take appropriate steps to protect our customers,” Apple said in its statement. “We will continue to use our resources to stay ahead of malicious hackers and defend our customers from security attacks, regardless of who’s behind them.”

The report is the latest bombshell unleashed through documents leaked by Snowden.

The leaks revealed widespread government spying . Targets have included U.S. citizens and foreign political leaders.

Snowden is now a wanted man and has been living under temporary asylum in Russia.
