Apple today announced a global expansion of its education content.
iBooks Textbooks, which allow interactive content including animations and videos, will now be available in 51 countries including Brazil, Italy and Japan, while iTunes U Course Manager, which allows teachers “to create and distribute courses for their own classrooms or share them publicly” will be available in 70 countries now including Russia, Thailand and Malaysia.
Publishers including Oxford University Press will be at the forefront of the new push. “OUP is using iBooks Author for Headway, Oxford’s all-time best-selling English language series, to create engaging iBooks Textbooks for iPad,” said Peter Marshall, Managing Director, ELT Division at Oxford University Press. He claimed: “In releasing 13 new iBooks Textbooks, including ‘Headway Pre-Intermediate,’ the best-selling level in the series, we are enriching the language learning experience for students around the world.”
Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Internet Software and Services, said: “The incredible content and tools available for iPad provide teachers with new ways to customise learning unlike ever before.”
Apple claims almost 25,000 educational titles have been created by independent publishers, teachers and leading education services companies, including new educational content from Cambridge University Press, Oxford University Press and Hodder Education, iBooks Textbooks now cover 100 percent of US high school core curriculum and the General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) core curriculum in the UK.
iTunes U Course Manager allows teachers to share their highlights of books, the web, apps and other content, and to integrate their own documents as part of a course curriculum.
Oxford’s 13 new iBooks Textbooks, which will launch at The Bett education Show in London include Headway, English for Football and eight new titles from the popular Oxford Read and Discover series. Cambridge University Press today also launched the very first IGCSE textbooks on the iBooks Store. The series of Cambridge IGCSE Geography textbooks are the first ‘Made for iBooks’ titles in the series to become available.
