An Apple Rumour, A Curved iPhone Coming For Next Year - Forbes

As Bloomberg is reporting there’s a story out there that there will be a curved iPhone available next year. Which would be something of a surprise if it does indeed come in the form that Bloomberg suggests:

Apple Inc. (AAPL) is developing new iPhone designs including bigger screens with curved glass and enhanced sensors that can detect different levels of pressure, said a person familiar with the plans.

Two models planned for release in the second half of next year will feature larger displays with glass that curves downward at the edges, said the person, declining to be identified as the details aren’t public. Sensors that can distinguish heavy or light touches on the screen may be incorporated into subsequent models, the person said.

The thought is that the larger screen size will be almost as large as Samsung’s Galaxy Note 3, the just released version.

However, before we all go off on one about how Apple is obviously just copying Samsung’s design innovation of a curved screen (which will bring interesting comparisons with Apple’s continual invocation of the design patent to a rectangular phone with rounded corners) note something rather important about that description that Bloomberg provides. Which is that the glass will curve downwards at the edges, not upwards.

Correct, the description given means that the screens will be convex to the user, not concave as with the current Samsung models with curved screens. Now, whether that’s quite what Bloomberg meant to say or not I’m not sure and there’s absolutely no way at all to check it with Apple as they never comment on stories like this (nor will they ever talk to people from The Register, where I also work at times).

Still, it’s all a bit like Christmas preparations starting earlier every year, isn’t it? We’re not a even a month past the last iPhone launch and we’re already talking about the next one.
