When Apple (AAPL) unveiled its two new iPhone models last month, it apparently didn't get everything out of its system, as reports surfaced Tuesday that the Cupertino company will unveil two upgraded iPad models Oct. 22.

The report on the AllThingsD website, quoting "people familiar with Apple's plans," said the invitation-only event will primarily focus on unveiling the fifth-generation iPad. The device, said the report, will be thinner and lighter, "more akin to the iPad Mini's" design. An upgraded iPad Mini is also expected.

An Apple spokeswoman declined to comment.

The AllThingsD report did not identify the location for the event but suggested it could take place at Apple's Town Hall Auditorium in Cupertino or the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco, where previous product launches have taken place over the years.

The event is also likely to include details on Apple's new Mac Pro and its OS X Mavericks operating system.

The new iPad, the sources said, will run on Apple's new 64-bit A7 chip. Also, the second-generation iPad Mini will be upgraded to include a Retina display.

"They're refreshing their iPad and from what we hear from the supply-chain perspective, there'll also be a new Mini with Retina display, but it'll be in short supply," said Gartner analyst Carolina Milanesi.

She suggested that due to the supply-chain crimp, "Apple may do a staggered launch. So if they're looking at less than 5 million units, they'll probably release the Mini in the United States for the holiday season and they may launch it in China for Chinese New Year at the end of January."

One big question is whether the new iPads will sport Apple's Touch ID sensors, an innovation that lets users unlock their devices and make iTunes purchases by applying their finger to the device. The new iPhone 5S that was introduced in September replaced the home button with this new fingerprint technology, and Apple may well include it on either or both of the new iPad models.

Also expected at the Oct. 22 event will be more details, such as price and release date, on Apple's new Mac Pro and Mavericks software. The Mac Pro, with its new design, was previewed at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference last June, while Mavericks, also debuted at that same show, has been in beta testing since then.
